Hi all – it’s a busy time for the friends at present. The recent book sale brought in $1839.00 and the well attended Alison Holst night brought in another $ 3458.95. In these difficult economic times this is a very good result indeed.
FROM OUR CHAIRPERSON
Upcoming events are:
The Bridge Tournament now scheduled for Sunday 20 September. Play to start at 1.15 pm. Duplicate play. Transport and partners available if needed. All levels, all welcome – both club and social players. Prizes, raffles, complimentary wine, juice and a stunning afternoon tea all for a $15 entry fee.
The Play - Saturday 10 October 2009 in the Levin Memorial Hall. The title is “Hardback Mountain” - tickets $20 each and they will be on sale from 18th September in Levin Library. The play is a “who-done-it” with the audience questioning the actors between acts, when desserts will be served. Doors open 7.15 pm. Bar and raffles. This is another fund raiser for the new library and community centre.
Another event happening at present in the Mall is the Raffle of the Suzuki Swift 1.5XE manual 5 Door Hatch. Tickets are on sale now and until 16 September in the Mall – thence in the Library. $10 per ticket or a book of 6 tickets for $50. Raffle closes 30 Oct and will be drawn on 6 November and results published in the Manawatu Standard on 11 November. The winner will be telephoned. Be sure to get a ticket - The odds are 1 in 6000 – a great deal better than Lotto and it’s raising more funds for the new library and community centre as well.
The Horowhenua Library Trust which is the organisation raising funds for the new library is a registered charity. All donations made to the Trust's building fund are tax and GST exempt. Ask for a receipt for any amount of $5 or more.

AN OFFICIAL NOTICE TO ALL FRIENDS AND VOLUNTEERS
regarding funds raised for the Horowhenua Library trust by the Friends:
From the FOHL Committee Meeting Tuesday 16 July 2009:
The following request from the Horowhenua Library Trust was discussed:
The Trust's fund raiser, Bev Edlin, is finding that many organizations require a proportion of funds to be raised by applicant organisation themselves before they will consider making a grant. The Trustees have asked whether they may show the amount raised by the Friends as part of the community contribution when applying for grants.
This would not mean any transfer of funds from the FOHL to the Trust. The money would remain in the FOHL accounts and would still be used for the purposes for which it has been raised.
After discussion, the following motion was put:
proposed D.Edyvane seconded R Blake
That the Trust's request be agreed to, and that the Trust be authorised to declare $30,000 of FOHL funds to be part of the Levin community's contribution in fundraising efforts. This agreement is made on the understanding that this money is earmarked specifically for FOHL projects relating to the establishment of the
library component of the proposed new Levin Library and Community Centre.
This motion was passed unanimously.
Currently the FOHL has a total of just over $34,400 invested.

Upcoming visit to Levin
Jo Ransom has advised us that Richard Stallman, an international expert on open source software, is keen to visit our libraries as he is interested in our work with Kete and Koha. This is a very big deal for the Horowhenua.
He will be giving a public lecture on copyright and community between 4.00 pm and 5.00 pm on Wednesday the 7th October. This will either be in the Levin library or in the council chambers. Watch out for details in the local papers and in the library.
If you have any computer geeks in your family they would be interested in this event. Richard Stallman has an impressive list of credentials.
Check him out online.
