Homelink Librarian

Manila

I am originally from Manila, Philippines - born and bred over there.

I finished my university degree in Commerce major in Economics in 1987 in the Philippines.  Two weeks after graduation, I  started a career in banking  for 8 years where I worked for a couple of banks.  I rose through the ranks in the field of credit analysis and collection.  From then on, I was headhunted by different multinational companies.  After a stint with banking , two finance companies asked me to join them to head their credit & collection department.  A manufacturing company then asked me to setup their credit department  until it got ISO certification, and then I got pirated again!  I worked for a Thai-owned company setting up credit and collection  for a paging company.  In 1998,  before I migrated to New Zealand, I was working for an American firm that deals with bandwidths worth millions now commonly known as broadband internet connections.  It was a high pressure job being the head of Credit and Collection, with 17 staff and  a monthly target of $NZD 1million - and that was just  my 7:30am to 5pm job!

My 2nd job started at 5:30pm as a Professor of Economics in a university 30 minutes away from the business centre.  I held 3 classes at night from 5:30pm till 9pm, mostly working with students who worked by day and studied by night, striving to get a degree to make their lives better.

New Zealand

In 2001,  I decided to leave my career behind and migrate to New Zealand to join my gorgeous Kiwi husband.  In coming to New Zealand I was faced with a lot of challenges - a new country, new culture, new friends and a great career change.  In 2002, I was working as an office administrator for a church in the morning and working as a part time teller at the Bank of New Zealand.

In June 2005, I joined the Horowhenua Library Trust, completing my Diploma on Information Studies in June 2009.

New Career

When I joined the Horowhenua Library Trust in 2005, I started as part time staff . The tasks assigned to me were, processing of the payroll, handling of overdue accounts  which includes sending them to Baycorp,  producing the statistic reports monthly and circulation of books among the branches. In 2007, I became a full time staff where I was given new tasks to do all the accessions and managing the housebound services. And recently, buying large prints and talking books for the elderly complements my role as a Homelink librarian.

Shall I say a career change from the financial background to librarianship was not a bad idea after all, its just exciting.
